Night Owl’s Guide to Fresno County
By BARRY EITEL
Let’s set one thing straight—Fresno County is not a sleepy town. Locals and visitors alike find plenty to do after the sun goes down, from eating to shooting pool to plenty of dancing. The best way to escape the Central Valley heat, of course, might even be to sleep during the day and take on Fresno County’s vibrant nightlife. Here are eight spots to get you started.
Old Town Saloon
A resident favorite of Clovis, Old Town Saloon has a split personality. A neighborhood sports bar occupies the saloon during the day with 5 tvs complete with a pool table and juke box. Then it transforms into one of the area’s premier nightclubs five nights a week with a large dance floor and live DJs. The full bar pleases with simple, inexpensive drinks meant to fuel a night of dancing.
Enjoy a low-key night filled with delicious food, beer and fun as you smack a few balls around at Diamond Billiards. This Fresno County local favorite boasts 19 pool tables, dartboards and a boxing machine. Take a break from playing pool and challenge your friends to some old school arcade games such as Ms. Pac Man, Donkey Kong and Phoenix. This upscale pool hall is perfect for anyone looking to unwind with friends or coworkers and is open until 2 a.m. every day.
Ghaleb’s Hookah Bar & Grill
Ghaleb’s Hookah Bar & Grill is a chill place to unwind after a day enjoying the Fresno County sun. Serving as a hookah lounge, restaurant and nightclub this diverse venue has the best of both worlds. The lounge offers multiple flavors for hookahs that will suit any palate, as well as tasty bar food and drinks. Dance the night away as live DJs keeps the crowd going until after midnight.
The Lime Lite
The Lime Lite knows a thing or two about pleasing discerning Fresnans night after night since 1964. The atmosphere is comfortable, the patio is heated, the prime rib is juicy and the salads are crisp. This Fresno County values farm-to-fork freshness with fresh fruit and vegetables chosen from local farms and ranches. Even better, the wine list features many locally grown bottles. The Lime Lite is open until midnight Monday through Thursday and until 2 a.m. Friday and Saturday.
With a name like The Bar, this Fresno County favorite is about as low-key and relaxed as they come. This local dive bar draws in an unstuffy crowd and strong drinks. Patrons can take part in singing karaoke or challenge friends to a game of pool. You’re guaranteed to have a good time at The Bar.
The Tasting Room
The Tasting Room is Fresno County’s hotspot for true oenophiles or budding wine lovers—but it also serves up some exotic bottles of beer, too. The wine bar specializes in boutique wines from the Central Coast, Napa, Sonoma and the rest of the non-Californian world. This haven for wine lovers is open until wine until 9 p.m. on weeknights and 11 p.m. on weekends.
Sequoia Brewing Company Bar & Grill
Get some microbrew straight from the source at Sequoia Brewing Company Bar & Grill, which has been brewing up suds in Fresno County for years. The atmosphere is welcoming and the staff is extremely friendly; the brewery is a fantastic stop for local beer and fresh-made gastropub classics.
Unwind with martini in hand at The Standard, This upscale restaurant serves up delicious New American cuisine until midnight every night. The elegant atmosphere, soft leather seats, stone walls and granite bar create an ambiance reminiscent of Mad Men-era Manhattan. The private cabanas right outside, though, are pure West Coast.
