Fun for the Kids (or the Kid at Heart) in Fresno County
By MEGAN EILEEN McDONOUGH
Fresno County isn’t just a field trip for foodies; it’s an urban playground for kids young and old. Whether learning a new sport or revisiting a fond pastime, we guarantee you’ll enjoy the ride...in some cases, literally. From indoor educational museums to pirate-themed mini-golf courses, it’s easy to feel like a kid in Fresno County...even if you’re not. Here are some fun (and nearly free) activities for the whole family.
Whether you're 5 or 50, the thought of being a pilot has probably crossed your mind. At Castle Air Museum, visitors can live the dream in the form of wartime memorabilia, military mementos and an impressive collection of more than 55 vintage aircrafts. For veterans, it might just feel like a walk down memory lane. Among Fresno’s other interactive centers is the Discovery Center Museum. Structured less like a traditional museum and more like an interactive science arcade, it lets kids can get hands on experience with the world around them and learn as they go. Exhibits run the gamut from dinosaurs to electricity.
Get a glimpse of some of the world's most beloved animals at the Fresno Chaffee Zoo, home to 190 species of mammals, birds and fish. It's easy to spend the entire day within park that is home to 190 species of mammals, birds and fish. The African Adventure is one of the zoo's newest and most popular exhibits. Spanning over 13 acres, you'll spot lions, elephants, white rhinos, cheetahs and even a new giraffe. It's about as close to the savanna as you can get without hopping on a plane. Stop at the zoo’s award winning Sea Lion Cove where you can learn about the marine animals that call the California Coast home. Visitors have the opportunity to come face to nose with a sea lion and watch them as they swim underwater through a unique underwater viewing window.
Ever wanted to play pirate for a day? Here’s your chance to channel your inner Captain Jack Spearow! At Blackbeard’s Family Fun Center, kids (and kids at heart) have their pick of activities—batting cages, bumper boats, ropes course adventures and waterslides, to name a few. Mini golf is also available, with three different courses including the Pirates Course.
If the pirate life isn’t for you, head to Boomers where you can find the same selection of outdoor sports. Along with miniature golf, visitors can race on go karts or try their luck at bumper boats. If you need a break from the Fresno County sunshine, opt for a game of laser tag.
Fairytales Come True
It's not every day that you get to be part of your favorite fairytale, but that all changes once you step into Storyland and Playland. Located across from the Fresno Chaffee Zoo, this magical land has welcomed kids of all ages with its fairytale-themed rides and live performances. Hop on the historic Willis B. Kyle Express Train for a scenic view of Roeding Park or take in a show at the outdoor theater. On any given day, you’ll see storytellers, magicians, singers and more as you make your way through this fairytale wonderland. Kids can immerse themselves into popular stories as they follow the path to Humpty Dumpty, the Three Little Pigs, Alice in Wonderland and other beloved fairytale favorites. Don't forget to hop over to Playland
