5 Smart Travel Tips for Fresno County
By MEGAN EILEEN McDONOUGH
California might have a reputation for being an expensive place to vacation, but Fresno County is the exception to the rule. Whether seeking outdoor adventure, fine dining or shopping malls, there's something for every preference and price point here. From attending a few of Fresno County’s many budget-friendly events to taking advantage of off-season deals, here are five smart travel tips that will help you save big-time.
1. Attend budget events.
Fresno County has no shortage of affordable culture. Attending one of Fresno County's farmers’ markets not only unlocks a world of fresh fruit and veggies, but it gives a glimpse into the local community. Many, like Vineyard Farmer's Market or Old Town Clovis Farmer’s Market, are open year-round with a range of hours early morning until evening.
For the art lover, ArtHop occurs from 5-8pm every 1st and 3rd Thursday of each month. Art enthusiasts flock to downtown Fresno and the Tower District for meet and greets with the artists, and to enjoy the reception and music. With over 50 participating studios, galleries, and museums, ArtHop has become a cultural experience within the community.
2. Hit up happy hours.
It's happy hour somewhere, right? For seasonal favorites, head straight to the Elbow Room, where happy hour from Monday to Friday, 3 p.m. to 6 p.m., features mixed drinks, craft beer and wine specials, as well as delectable gourmet dishes, such as crab cakes and Harris Ranch cheeseburgers and fries. It’s definitely worth the splurge...and happy hours sweeten the deal.
After an action-packed day of exploring, slide onto a barstool and unwind from your day. All-day Monday happy hour is always a hit at Press Box, but don't worry if you can't make it out so early in the week; they have regular happy hours daily, from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. and from 9 p.m. to close.
3. Know your specials.
If you play your cards right you're sure to find deals and discounts right under your nose. If you're in the mood to shop, there are various specials offered at the Sierra Vista Mall. With close to 700,000 square feet of retail space, there are certainly enough stores to keep you entertained for hours. ApCal Wines offers free tastings for two and has a calendar packed with weekend events throughout the summer for those 21 and over! Complete with bumper boats, laser tag and more, Boomers offers $5 off a 4-hour Champ Pass.
4. Use apps to enhance your experience.
While we don’t encourage anyone to be on their smartphone 24/7, there are some apps that can really enhance your trip to Fresno County. On your next shopping and dining excursion, check out Fashion Fair and River Park’s mobile apps. Make the most of your visit with information on each store, the latest sales, places to eat, and a detailed map. Looking for something quick and delicious to eat? Foodies will rejoice using food apps from restaurants like Westwoods BBQ & Spice Co., which allow you to place an order from your phone–what's better than BBQ at your fingertips?
5. Take advantage of off-season deals.
Can't make it to Fresno County this summer? Don't fret! While June, July and August tend to be popular months to visit Fresno County, other months bring something special to experience. Luckily, Fresno County has pleasant weather year-round, so you can't go wrong with a fall or winter trip. In fact, wine connoisseurs might actually prefer a fall trip that coincides with grape harvest time (aka "the crush"). On the flipside, skiers and snowboarders should book a winter stay at China Peak for optimal snowfall totals.
