One of the finest films of Japanese cinema, Hirokazu Kore-eda’s first feature film Maborosi is a story of love, loss, and ultimately, regeneration. Haunted by the mysterious loss of her grandmother many years ago, a beautiful young mother (Yumiko, played by Makiko Esumi) struggles to come to terms with the sudden loss of her husband. Yumiko remarries and with her young son moves to her new husband’s home in a remote village on the wild, untamed Sea of Japan. There, she is haunted by the past, but with time and the natural wonders around her, she awakens to find love, understanding, and a sense of peace. Kore-eda’s feature films reflect back on his beginnings in documentary with a regard to truth and an incredibly humane sense of his characters’ strength and fallibilities. Working with almost entirely natural lighting, Kore-eda’s remarkable and elegant camerawork makes Maborosi one of the most striking visual works in cinema. In Japanese with English subtitles. 110 minutes.

Discussant: Amélie van Elmbt (Director)

The Elephant and the Butterfly is Belgian director Amélie van Elmbt’s second feature-length film after her first, La tête la première (Headfirst), which screened at Cannes in 2012. It tells the story of Antoine, who after five years of travel to learn to become a chef, returns to his native city of Liège, Belgium, to open his own restaurant.  But the return is more difficult than expected. He decides to visit Camille, his former lover.  Camille, however, has no time for him: she is about to leave for an important business trip and waits for Olga, her daughter Elsa’s babysitter. She soon is in a panic: she might miss her plane because Olga is late. So she asks Antoine to wait for the babysitter. Taken by surprise, he accepts to wait for Olga. Will Olga arrive?  What if she does not?  What will he do with Elsa if her babysitter does not show? Van Elmbt’s enchanting fairy tale manages to conjure both the world of a five-year old and the touching anxieties of an adult who has never been responsible for a small child.  In French with English subtitles. 86 minutes.

Discussant: Chris Tashima (Actor featured in the film)

December 7, 1941 – Tomikazu “Tomi” Nakaji and his best friend Billy Davis are playing baseball in a field near their homes in Hawaii when Japan launches a surprise attack on the US at Pearl Harbor. As Tomi looks up at the sky and recognizes the blood-red sun emblem on the fighter planes, he knows that his life has changed forever. Torn between his love of all things American and the Japanese traditional ways of his parents and grandfather, Tomi is frightened and feels ashamed of his native country. His friendship with Billy is soon tested as prejudice divides their island community. He must find the courage to stand up to a neighborhood bully, while protecting his family’s honor and its katana, a century-old samurai sword. He is soon forced to become the man of the family to care for his Mama and sister after his Papa (Chris Tashima) is arrested and taken away to an internment camp. Adapted from Graham Salisbury’s 1995 historical novel and directed by Tim Savage, Under the Blood Red Sun, is an unforgettable story (based on actual events) of friendship, courage & survival. 99 minutes. Embodying strength and stoicism, five Venezuelan women from diverse backgrounds each draw a portrait of their country as it suffers under the worst social, economic and political crisis in its history amid extreme food and medicine shortages, a broken justice system, and widespread fear. The women share what life is really like for them and their families as the truth about their country’s difficulties is repeatedly denied by their government. Featuring stunning visuals and creative soundscapes, Women of the Venezuelan Chaos presents a uniquely beautiful country and its people, who remain resilient and resourceful despite the immense challenges they face. In Spanish with English subtitles. 83 minutes. Trailer: https://vimeo.com/227763820

Discussant: Dr. Margaret Wilkerson (author of the forthcoming book, Lorraine Hansberry: Am I a Revolutionary?)

Sighted Eyes/Feeling Heart is the first-ever feature documentary about Lorraine Hansberry, the visionary author of the groundbreaking play A Raisin in the Sun. An overnight sensation, this play transformed the American theater and has long been considered a classic, yet the remarkable story of the playwright faded from view. With this documentary, filmmaker Tracy Heather Strain resurrects the Lorraine Hansberry we have forgotten—a passionate artist, committed activist and sought-after public intellectual who waged an outspoken and defiant battle against injustice in 20th-century America. The film reveals Hansberry’s prescient works tackling race, human rights, women’s equality and sexuality that anticipated social and political movements on the horizon. Lorraine Hansberry lived much of her 34 years guided by a deep sense of responsibility to others, proclaiming: “One cannot live with sighted eyes and feeling heart and not know or react to the miseries which afflict this world.” 118 minutes.

About This Event

Born In Israel, Roy had your average beginning. Then, as if the confusion of his roots wouldn’t eventually turn this little fella into a skewed man, his parents pulled a mean trick… …deciding to raise him in Kentucky. Pursuing the profession of Stand-up Comedy was only inevitable. Whether it’s making fun of his height (5’2), tackling personal issues, slamming an analytical magnifying glass on world events and society in general, or sharing a story from his travels – Roy’s comedy is live, direct, and playfully honest. Fan’s rave of his wit, and all who have seen him appreciate his will to speak his mind. Though he often leads his audience to the very edge, he shows great tact in realizing where it is and attempts to tread past the threshold only when necessary and never for the cheap, yet often sought-after “shock value” laugh. His set material focuses on self-deprecation, hypocrisy in politics (is that redundant?), double standards in culture, and his ability for story telling of topics that all audience members can enjoy. Not only will Roy’s show have you doubled over with laughter, but it will also undoubtedly move you to thought and reason. No, really… Roy has performed throughout the USA, Canada, and for the United States troops, both abroad and on U.S. soil. He’s shared the stage with the likes of Jim Breuer, Tommy Davidson, Don Rickles, Kevin Nealon, Iliza Shlesinger, Tom Arnold, Tim Wilson, Tom Green, and many more. He was also a semi finalist in the prestigious International San Francisco Comedy Competition (past competitors include: Robin Williams, Ellen DeGeneres, Sinbad and Dana Carvey, to name a few). He was also recently a participant in the San Luis Obispo (SLO) Comedy Festival. So, come on out to the show, warm up your face muscles, and prepare your tear ducts for an evening of hilarity. You’ll be sure to have BIG fun with this little dude! Free. Bring tip money for the headliner. Hosted by Danny Minch and Dave Apkarian.

Fresno Convention Center
848 M Street Fresno, CA 93721

About This Event

Please join people of faith from across the San Joaquin Valley, on February 19, 2019 at 7:00 AM at the Fresno Convention Center for the Fresno/Clovis Prayer Breakfast. This community tradition celebrates our blessings as a community and upholds our public officials in prayer as they carry out their duties.

This local event began humbly in the 1940s when five businessmen started meeting at a Divisadero Street restaurant for prayer and fellowship. The group has grown to become one of our valley’s largest annual community gatherings, drawing Christians of all backgrounds and elements from the Fresno and Clovis communities. The Fresno/Clovis Prayer Breakfast has spanned the terms of eleven Fresno mayors and has grown to include the Clovis mayors as well.

During the 1970’s tenure of Mayor Ted C. Wills, the name was changed from the Fresno Community Prayer Breakfast to the Fresno Mayors’ Prayer Breakfast.  And during the mid-1990’s term of Mayor Jim Patterson, the name was changed to the Fresno/Clovis Prayer Breakfast when the community of Clovis was invited to participate.

Over the years the keynote speakers have come from a wide variety of experiences – pastors, public servants, sports figures, judges, community leaders, and community activists.

Don’t miss the 2019 keynote speaker,  Dr. Tony Evans, as he shares a message of inspiration and encouragement!

Tower Theatre

About This Event

Jan. 11, 5:30 and 8:45 p.m. Filmworks presents South Korea’s 2019 Oscar selection for Best Foreign Language Film, “Burning,” based on the highly regarded Haruki Murakami short story, “Barn Burning.” Master filmmaker Lee Chang-dong beautifully balances suspense and serenity through cinematic metaphor in this dramatic mystery/thriller. “Burning” is the searing examination of an alienated young man, Jongsu, an introvert whose already difficult life is complicated by the appearance of Haemi, a spirited woman who offers romantic possibility, and Ben, a wealthy and sophisticated young man Haemi returns from a trip with. When Jongsu learns of Ben’s mysterious hobby and Haemi suddenly disappears, his confusion and obsessions deepen, culminating in a stunning finale. The film tackles the effects of consumerism on the working class and the deep-seated compulsion to control. In Korean and English, with English subtitles.148 minutes, Not Rated. Advance tickets cost $10 general and $8 for students and seniors, and they can be purchased by check or cash at the Tower Theatre box office, 815 E. Saroyan Theatre
730 M Street Fresno, CA 93721

About This Event

For centuries the trade routes of the Silk Road transmitted goods and culture between Asia, the Middle East, and Europe in one of the earliest examples of globalization. We explore East-West cultural exchange and influence in Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov’s Scheherazade and Zhao Jiping’s Pipa Concerto No. 2, featuring the extraordinary Wu Man. Missy Mazzoli’s musical love letter to Detroit, River Rouge Transfiguration, brings the theme of this concert home to the U.S. as we grapple with globalization’s cycles of change and rebirth.

Tower Theatre for the Performing Arts
809 E Olive Avenue Fresno, CA 93728

About This Event

What started as a casual reunion jam in a Los Angeles rehearsal room in 2011 has grown into a fully-fledged project that has taken on a life of its own. Last In Line, the band, takes its name from the second Dio album released in 1984. Vinny Appice, Jimmy Bain and Vivian Campbell were Ronnie Dio’s co-conspirators and co-writers on the “Holy Diver”, “Last In Line” and “Sacred Heart” albums – these records have gone on to become part of rock history.

During that first jam it was apparent that the chemistry of the original band was very much intact – even after a 27 year hiatus. The excitement generated by that rediscovery led to a second session, where this time they called in acclaimed vocalist Andrew Freeman. Hearing Andrew’s interpretations of the original Dio songs was a revelation and the inspiration to move forward as a band.

Over the ensuing years a handful of local LA shows led to a handful of overseas shows in the U.K. and Japan, and eventually to an offer from Frontiers to record a new album of original material.
During the course of 2014 the band wrote and recorded 12 new songs and chose longtime friend Jeff Pilson as producer. Jeff very much captured the organic crunch of the band and the very best in Andrew’s voice and delivery.
Last In Line’s debut album, “Heavy Crown” was released in February 2016, with the singles “Devil In Me” and “Starmaker” leading the charge. But the release was preceded by tragedy, when Jimmy Bain passed away at the age of 68 on January 23rd, another great musician taken from us far too soon.
Jimmy was immensely proud of the new album and his input to “Heavy Crown” was immeasurable. “We will continue to celebrate his life through his music.. Rest in peace, dear friend.”..Viv

Earlier this year Last In Line played a handful of shows, including headlining both the frontiers Rock Festival in Milan and the Metal Stage at the Rocklahoma Festival, bringing in renowned bassist Phil Soussan and keyboardist Erik Norlander. The gigs featured tracks from “Heavy Crown” alongside songs from those classic Dio albums.

About This Event

In 1975 Pablo Cruise released its first A&M album simply entitled Pablo Cruise. The album cover was shot in the tropical gardens of San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park and it featured a huge gorilla standing front and center. The band, David Jenkins (guitars, vocals), Cory Lerios(keyboards, vocals), Bud Cockerel (bass, vocals) and Steve Price (drums, percussion) were no where in sight. At that point there was a bit of a mystique surrounding Pablo Cruise and when asked what Pablo Cruise meant, the well-rehearsed answer went something like this: “Pablo”, represents an honest, real, down to earth individual, and “Cruise” depicts his fun loving, easy going attitude towards life: In essence that’s what Pablo Cruise music is all about. Honest, real down to earth vocals, accompanied by fun yet elegant, infectious grooves.

From 1975 to 1985 the band toured the United States, Canada and Japan extensively, welcoming fans to “Climb Aboard The Good Ship Pablo Cruise.” Reaching the top 10 with mega hits like “Whatcha Gonna Do When She Says Goodbye?” and “Love Will Find A Way,”and several other top 20’s, the band went on to sell several million albums and singles collectively and established themselves as well respected writers and performers within the industry. They appeared on numerous TV shows, including Dick Clark’s American Bandstand, The Merv Griffin Show, The Dinah Shore Hour and in 1979 they broke Elvis Presley’s attendance record at the Sahara Tahoe in South Lake Tahoe, Nevada, becoming the first rock band to play a casino showroom. They also became the first rock band to grace the stage at the Grand Ole Opry, but by 1985 after completing several national tours and releasing 7 studio albums in all, the band decided to take a hiatus……one that lasted nearly 20 years.

Fast forward 20 years…..In 2005 a reunited Pablo Cruise picked up where they left off and today the band performs all over the U.S. and Canada and they’re enjoying it more than ever….Since getting back together, they have released two live CD’s and a DVD all through Sony Music documenting their exceptional live shows. “One of the great things about playing shows after all these years is that the core band, David, Steve and myself are still here and lovin’ it, says Cory! Going out and playing shows these days gives us the opportunity to not only pay tribute to our timeless repertoire, it gives us a chance to see old friends and fans from back in the day as well as gaining a whole new audience!” Today Pablo Cruise is bringing more energy and excitement to the stage than ever before and with the addition of Larry Antonino and Robbie Wyckoff, the band has never sounded better.

Clay is a regular host at Punchline and Cobb's in San Francisco, as well as Rooster T Feathers in Sunnyvale. He won Comedy Oakland's Tournament of Champions in 2015 and made it to the finals in 2017. 5k and 2 Mile Walk/Run Registered Participants will Receive - T-shirt - Beanie - Timing chip - Bib - Kiwanis breakfast after the race - Local vendors will be onsite with information about addiction recovery services Addiction affects the entire family. Ask any parent who has lived through the nightmare of a child who abuses drugs. Talk to a spouse of someone trapped in the abuse of prescription medications. When a person compulsively uses drugs or alcohol, their behavior does not exist in a vacuum. Their destructive behavior impacts their family and loved ones. Here are a few of the ways families are impacted when their loved one is addicted. - Relationships are damaged or lost - Emotional turmoil exists - Verbal or emotional abuse can arise - Negative family roles can emerge (caretaking or lying) - Financial security is threatened - The risk of disease becomes a concern The Jimmy Run was started to honor avid runner Jim Harris. Jim started running in 1976 and never stopped. He completed 22 marathons, including the Boston marathon three times, and countless road races around the valley. A real competitor, Jim loved the fitness and competition that running provided. What he enjoyed, even more, was the lifelong camaraderie of Fresno’s running community. Jim Harris was also the father of an addict. He understood that addiction impacts the entire family system. His son, Tod James Harris, is a former addict who now devotes his time to helping others struggling with addiction. He is the Executive Director of Total Life Change. This is the inspiration for the second annual Jimmy 5K & 2 Mile run/walk. Thank you for honoring Jim’s memory by participating in this race and helping raise awareness for FAMILIES IN RECOVERY.

Saroyan Theatre
700 M St. Fresno, CA 93721

About This Event

Two worlds collide in this "breathtaking and exquisite" (The New York Times) musical, based on the 2015 Tony Award-winning Lincoln Center Theater production. One of Rodgers & Hammerstein's finest works, The King and I boasts a score that features such beloved classics as "Getting To Know You,""I Whistle a Happy Tune,""Hello Young Lovers,""Shall We Dance" and "Something Wonderful." Set in 1860's Bangkok, the musical tells the story of the unconventional and tempestuous relationship that develops between the King of Siam and Anna Leonowens, a British schoolteacher whom the modernist King, in an imperialistic world, brings to Siam to teach his many wives and children. The King and I is "too beautiful to miss" (New York Magazine).
