About This Event

A Gentleman's Guide To Love & Murder comes to the Saroyan Theatre November 28-29, 2017. Ticketmaster is the official ticketing source for Broadway in Fresno and the Saroyan Theatre.

Getting away with murder can be so much fun... and there's no better proof than the knock-'em-dead hit show that won the 2014 Tony Award for Best Musical- A Gentleman's Guide to Love & Murder!

Direct from New York, where the most gentlemanly NPR critic said he'd "never laughed so hard at a Broadway musical," Gentleman's Guide tells the uproarious story of Monty Navarro, a distant heir to a family fortune who sets out to jump the line of succession, by any means necessary.

The most interesting thing about AfriCali is that it lends importance to all the instrumentation as much as it does to the vocals, while the melodies of each instrument and voice develops in episodes, as opposed to the familiarverse-chorus format. About This Event

ALTON BROWN LIVE: EAT YOUR SCIENCE, the follow-up to the smash “Edible Inevitable” tour, is coming to Fresno’s Saroyan Theatre, March 20, 2017. Ticketmaster is the official source for tickets for Broadway In Fresno and Saroyan Theatre. Fans can expect all-new everything including songs, multimedia presentations, talk-show antics, and bigger and better potentially dangerous food demonstrations. Brown has a knack for mixing together a perfect base of science, music and food into two hours of pure entertainment. Critics and fans alike have raved about the interactive components of Brown’s shows. He promises “plenty of new therapy inducing opportunities during our audience participation segments. I don’t want to give too much away, but this time we’re going to play a little game while we’re at it. Plus, you’ll see things I’ve never been allowed to do on TV.” He’s also contemplating more sophisticated protective gear for folks in the first few rows…just in case things get messy…again. Brown, author of the James Beard award winning, “I’m Just Here for the Food,” and the New York Times bestselling sequence, “Good Eats,” is releasing the first of two new cookbooks through Ballantine Books (an imprint of Random House) in the Fall of 2016. ALTON BROWN: EVERY DAY COOK, or EDC as Brown calls it, is a collection of more than 100 personal recipes as well as a pinch of science and history. He has hosted numerous series including, “Cutthroat Kitchen,” “Camp Cutthroat” and “Iron Chef America” and created, produced and hosted the Peabody award winning series, “Good Eats” for 13 years on Food Network. Good Eats can still be seen on the Cooking Channel and Netflix.

About This Event

Heralded as one of our country's foremost comics, Paula Poundstone's quick-thinking, unscripted approach to comedy makes for a perfect fit on NPR's #1 show, the screwball weekly news quiz show WAIT WAIT…. DON’T TELL ME! , where she holds the record for game losses. Now, in May 2017, Paula's first book, "The Totally Unscientific Study of the Search For Human Happiness," has been released to glowing reviews. "A deeply revealing memoir in which the pathos doesn't kill the humor," wrote the Kirkus Reviews. "A crack writer of uncommonly hilarious observations... smart, sweet, and laugh-out-loud funny balm for exceedingly stressful times."
Paula also has her own podcast called "Live From The Poundstone Institute" coming out July 8 via NPR. With Paula at the helm, the show will explore and riff on research studies that are so odd they just beg for someone to stand up and say, "wait, what?" The weekly episodes will be taped in front of a live audience.
In 2016 Paula voiced the character "Forgetter Paula" in Disney/Pixar's Academy Award-winning feature film, "Inside Out." But it is in her live shows where her comic bulb shines the brightest. Her live shows are a reflection of her witty interaction with the audience, no two shows are ever the same. "There's a disarming ease in her craft, an immediate sense that she's so quick on her feet, you need never worry about the possibility of something going wrong," writes Nick Zaino of the Boston Globe.

DiCicco's Old Town Clovis
408 Clovis Avenue Clovis, CA 93612

About This Event

Bob Zany is an American stand-up comedian. He is known for performing with his trademark cigar on stage. In 1976, he appeared as a contestant on The Gong Show. Between that time and a 1986 appearance on the TV special George Schlatter's Comedy Club, he had gained a significant amount of weight, which he was able to lose by the time he appeared as a contestant on To Tell the Truth in 1990. Zany now appears weekly on the nationally syndicated radio program The Bob and Tom Show, and has his own segment called The Zany Report. In recent years, he has also guest-hosted portions of Jerry Lewis' Labor Day Telethon. Zany also had a small role in the film Joe Dirt as the guy at the radio station who pushes Joe down at the beginning of the movie. On September 16, 2006, he appeared on the Comedy Central special, The Friends of the Bob and Tom Show. Zany appeared in the Steven Soderbergh film The Informant, released September 18, 2009. The movie is a dark comedy about a Decatur, Illinois agri-business giant's price-fixing scandal, and the bipolar whistleblower, Mark Whitacre, who is portrayed by Matt Damon. Zany plays Whitacre's lawyer, John Dowd, in the comedian-rich cast. In June 2010 Zany toured Israel with the Comedy for Koby show, hosted by the Koby Mandell Foundation. Zany performed in Jerusalem, Tel Aviv, Raanana, Beit Shemesh, Haifa, Modi'in and Gush Etzion. Bob is also due to star in the documentary film, "Close but no cigar." https://www.eventbrite.com/e/bob-zany-headlines-diciccos-in-old-town-clovis-tickets-39130938691

Saroyan Theatre
730 M Street Fresno, CA 93721

About This Event

Join the Fresno Adult School to celebrate Cesar Chavez at the Saroyan Theatre! Senator Robert F. Kennedy described Cesar Chavez as “one of the heroic figures of our time.” A true American hero, Cesar was a civil rights, Latino and farm labor leader; a genuinely religious and spiritual figure; a community organizer and social entrepreneur; a champion of militant nonviolent social change; and a crusader for the environment and consumer rights. A first-generation American, he was born on March 31, 1927, near his family’s small homestead in the North Gila River Valley outside Yuma, Arizona. At age 11, his family lost their farm during the Great Depression and became migrant farm workers. Throughout his youth and into adulthood, Cesar traveled the migrant streams throughout California laboring in the fields, orchards and vineyards, where he was exposed to the hardships and injustices of farm worker life. After attending numerous schools as the family migrated, Cesar finished his formal education after the eighth grade and worked the fields full-time to help support his family. Although his formal education ended then, he later satisfied an insatiable intellectual curiosity and was self-taught on an eclectic range of subjects through reading during the rest of his life. Cesar joined the U.S. Navy in 1946, in the aftermath of World War II, and served in the Western Pacific. He returned from the service in 1948 to marry Helen Fabela, whom he met while working in fields and vineyards around Delano. Together they settled in the East San Jose barrio of Sal Si Puedes (Get Out if You Can), and had eight children, later enjoying 31 grandchildren.

As a last resort, he moves into the mosque, praying for a little help. Surprisingly, God seems to answer. Adan quickly lands a good job, devout friends, and a newfound faith. When Adan nearly hits a stray dog on the job, he’s forced to take it in for a night. But one of his new mosque friends considers the dog impure, and he throws Adan out. About This Event

From the well-publicized events at San Francisco State in 1968 to the image of black students with guns emerging from the takeover of the student union at Cornell University in April, 1969, the struggle for a more relevant and meaningful education, including demands for black and ethnic studies programs, became a clarion call across the country in the late 1960's. Through the stories of these young men and women who were at the forefront of these efforts, Agents of Change examines the untold story of the racial conditions on college campuses and in the country that led to these protests.  The film’s characters were caught at the crossroads of the civil rights, black power, and anti-Vietnam war movements at a pivotal time in America’s history. Today, over 45 years later, many of the same demands are surfacing in campus protests across the country, revealing how much work remains to be done. Agents of Change links the past to the present and the present to the past--making it not just a movie but a movement. 66 minutes http://www.agentsofchangefilm.com/

About This Event

Lost Birds presents a historical tragedy that takes place in 1915, from the point of view of two children.  The story is about Bedo, played by (Heros Agopyan) and Maryam, played by (Dila Uluca), whose beautiful, warm, and happy lives in Anatolia comes to an end when their grandfather played by ( Sarkis Acemoglu) is taken away by soldiers. Out of extreme fear, their mother, played by (Takuhi Bahar), forbid the children to go outside, but being children, they sneak out to their favorite spot to play, only to come back to an empty home and an empty village. Their fear takes over, and with their bird that they had saved, they embark on a journey toward Aleppo to find their mother, and their fellow villagers. This beautiful film made by an Armenian and a Turkish filmmaker with passion is a cinematographic beauty to watch.  Lost Birds is the first film made in Turkey about the 1915 Armenian genocide. About This Event

Set in present day Ghana, Nakom follows Iddrisu, a talented medical student who is summoned home by his sister after their father’s sudden death. Iddrisu buries his father and temporarily assumes the head of the impoverished household and farm, inheriting not only the delicate task of planting a successful crop, but also a debt left by the deceased patriarch that could destroy the family. Attempting to maintain part of his studies from the confines of a small hut, Iddrisu becomes increasingly frustrated with the incessant needs of those around him and the demanding toil of the land. The contentious relationship with his uncle Napoleon, to whom the sizeable debt is owed, is further complicated by the unplanned pregnancy of Napoleon’s daughter who was sent to live with Iddrisu’s family. Over the course of the growing season, Iddrisu grapples with tradition, familial duty, and the overwhelming sense of urgency to do what he must to secure his own future. About This Event

Over 110,000 Japanese Americans were incarcerated in ten camps from 1942 to 1945, in the largest mass imprisonment of citizens in U.S. history. Resistance at Tule Lake tells the long-suppressed story of the “No-No’s” – 12,000 incarcerees who defied the government by refusing to swear unconditional loyalty to the U.S. Although refusal was an act of protest and family survival, the government branded "No-No's" as “disloyals” and forced them to relocate to the newly militarized Tule Lake Segregation Center. This film is being screened in collaboration with the Henry Madden Library’s Japanese Oral History Project. 78 minutes. Film website: http://www.resistanceattulelake.com/

About This Event

Following international river conservationist, Mark Angelo, RiverBlue spans the globe to infiltrate one of the world’s most pollutive industries, fashion. Narrated by clean water supporter Jason Priestley, this groundbreaking documentary examines the destruction of our rivers, its effect on humanity, and the solutions that inspire hope for a sustainable future. Through harsh chemical manufacturing processes and the irresponsible disposal of toxic chemical waste, one of our favorite iconic products has destroyed rivers and impacted the lives of people who count on these waterways for their survival. RiverBue brings awareness to the destruction of some of the world’s most vital rivers through the manufacturing of our clothing, but will also act as a demand for significant change in the textile industry from the top fashion brands that can make a difference. 83 minutes, http://riverbluethemovie.com/

About This Event

The Heart of Madame Sabali is a dramatic film with touches of absurdist comedy, and features surrealist dream sequences and a colorful art design. The story is centered on Jeannette, who has a severe heart condition that keeps her trapped in a suburb of Montreal. After receiving her new heart, Jeannette begins to have strange visions of her donor's former life. Soon after, she is befriended by her donor's son, a Malian teenager, who believes she is his mother reincarnated. The story itself is based on the scientific concept of cellular memory, the idea that cells contain memories, and that organ recipients sometimes take on the personality traits of their donors. 1821 Calaveras St, Fresno, California 93721
1821 Calaveras St Fresno, CA 93721

About This Event

1821 Gallery & Studios will be exhibiting the work of Neal Breton, June 21 - July 28, 2017. Neal Breton, a New Hampshire native, currently residing in San Luis Obispo, has been professionally painting for 20 years. His bold color selection and creative interpretation of familiar subjects are unique and brilliant. Neal's artist statement speaks volumes about him; one time in kindergarten I was assigned crayons and a piece of cardboard, "draw something and we will cut it out for you". Others made jets, fire trucks and racecars. I made an abstract construct with asymmetrical lines jutting down out of sequential blocks of color. "What am I supposed to cut out?" the teacher said. I didn't know. This was my first les...son in the practical side of art. In the fourth grade, for Halloween, the class was to make black cats out of construction paper and glue. We were to follow a pattern. I noticed upon the day they were put the work up that my cat was not included. "Look at your cat, it is poorly cut, and you can see al the glue", my teacher said, "that's why I didn't put it up with all the others". This was my first lesson is craftsmanship. In college, my professor chose my first series of work in the display case outside the art department. "Oh, how horrible!" exclaimed and older woman, passing by. This was my first lesson in art appreciation. Neal Breton will be showing June 21- July 28. Art Hop will be July 6th, 5-8, and Neal will be in house to answer you questions.

Save Mart Center
2650 E. Shaw Avenue Fresno, CA 93710

About This Event

Jessie Magdaleno injured a hand while training this week and has to pull out of his scheduled Nov. 11 title defense in Fresno.
The ESPN-televised card will continue with all eyes on Central California’s junior-welterweight 2012 Olympian Jose Carlos Ramirez (20-0, 15 KOs) meeting Mike Reed who is ranked #10 in the world by the WBO (23-0, 12 KOs) in the main event.
Ramirez of Avenal, Calif., is a strong draw at Fresno’s 16,000-seat Save Mart Center, and a victory against Reed will move him to a bout for the WBC 140-pound World Title against New York’s Amir Imam (20-1, 17 KOs).
The WBC ruled this week that as 140-pound four-belt champion Terence Crawford moves to welterweight next year, Ramirez-Imam will be for Crawford’s former belt.
Two additional bouts have been added to the card, Top Rank prospects and Central California natives, Quilisto Madera 7-0 (4 KO’s) and Bryan Lua 1-0.

About This Event

FIRST TRY, is the Fresno premiere of a lighthearted drama by senior Fresno City College drama student, Jesse Parr, and is the writer's first original work for community theater. Jan 13-14 & 20-21 at 8:00PM Jan 15 & 22 at 2:00 PM Phillip is a black physician in his late 50's. Jonathan is a stubborn, white, graphic designer in his mid-20's. They become stranded, when Jonathan's truck runs out of oil and stalls on a dark California road, surrounded by miles of corn fields, somewhere between Tulare and the Grapevine. It's well past Midnight, and there's not a sign of life in sight. They're on their way to Los Angeles for the wedding of Phillip's daughter, Amanda, to Jonathan. Phillip and Jonathan just met that morning. All they have in the back of the truck are their suitcases, a few bags of peanuts and 30 bottles of wine for the wedding. They're hungry. They'd stopped earlier at a Taco Bell. Amanda hoped the drive would result in her father and Jonathan bonding. Under these circumstances, it would be difficult enough, and especially for Phillip, who personally feels Jonathan isn't the ideal match for his daughter. He knows virtually nothing about his future son-in-law, and even tries to bring up a vague notion of coloring between the lines. Jonathan doesn't drink any alcohol, sinceh his father was a heavy drinker. Phillip asks him to lighten up and share just one small cup of wine. Jonathan reluctantly agrees. They open a bottle and snack on peanuts. Jonathan quickly polishes off two bottles of wine, getting totally drunk. He then proceeds to pour his heart out to Phillip, with arrogance and attitude included, as well as a litany of personal frustrations that are all nonsense. Phillip must reckon himself to what he is hearing and come to grips with the fact that in three days time, Jonathan will be family. Their conversation is riddled with humor, some heartache, and with a result being compromise. Will they bond? Will they finally flag down a passing car? Will they get to Los Angeles in time for the wedding? Will there even be a wedding? Come see FIRST TRY and find out!

About This Event

We are thrilled to announce our friends from Found Collective will be doing their first pop up shop here at Root!

Do not miss this unique opportunity to shop their stylish selection of found goods here in person and meet the owners, husband and wife team, Juliann and Stephen Love.

As big fans of thrifting ourselves, but don't always have the time to do so, so we love how they curate their offerings and do the work for us!

Preview some of the goods and make sure to follow them on Instagram @found.co

Here's a little note from co-owner Juliann about how they got started...

My love and passion for design and anything creative has been a life long love. Thrifting has been a part of this journey too, and I never really took much time to really think about how much I really do love finding killer deals, taking what someone doesn't find value in anymore, and creating a space that's cohesive with unique items. I just LOVE it. It's one of those things that was too obvious and clear for me to actually see that I can make a business from this passion. And to see how it's been unfolding just makes me gitty cause I absolutely love what I'm doing. To see Found Collective becoming a brick & mortar is the DREAM and you all are contributing so much with supporting this passion.Thank you thank you.

SYNOPSIS: During a hazing, a fraternity of pre-med students has a particularly sinister prank in store for one their more timid pledges (Derek MacKinnon). With the help of a coed, Alana Maxwell (Jamie Lee Curtis), they pull off the prank so well that the pledge needs to be institutionalized as a result. After several years pass and people forget the incident, those involved with the prank are ready to celebrate their graduation by having a costume party on a train, but they haven't escaped their past yet. RUNTIME: 1 hr, 38 min. Please note: in order to participate in the potluck, please bring an item to share, enough for at least 25 people. Valdez Hall
702 M Street Fresno, CA 93721

About This Event

Please join people of faith from across the San Joaquin Valley on Tuesday, March 14, 2017 at 7:00 AM at the Fresno’s Valdez Hall (click for map) for the Fresno/Clovis Prayer Breakfast. This community tradition celebrates our blessings as a community and upholds our public officials in prayer as they carry out their duties. This local event began humbly in the 1940’s when five business men started meeting at a Divisadero Street restaurant for prayer and fellowship. The group has grown to become one of our valley’s largest annual community gatherings, drawing Christians of all backgrounds and elements from the Fresno and Clovis communities. The Fresno/Clovis Prayer Breakfast has spanned the terms of eleven Fresno mayors and has grown to include the Clovis mayors as well. During the 1970’s tenure of Mayor Ted C. Wills, the name was changed from the Fresno Community Prayer Breakfast to the Fresno Mayors’ Prayer Breakfast. And during the mid 1990’s term of Mayor Jim Patterson, the name was changed to the Fresno/Clovis Prayer Breakfast when the community of Clovis was invited to participate. Over the years the keynote speakers have come from a wide variety of experiences – pastors, public servants, sports figures, judges, community leaders, and community activists. Don’t miss the 2017 keynote speaker, Rev. Samuel Rodriguez as he shares a message of inspiration and encouragement!

About This Event

In 1979, James Baldwin wrote a letter to his literary agent describing his next project, Remember This House. The book was to be a revolutionary, personal account of the lives and successive assassinations of three of his close friends—Medgar Evers, Malcolm X and Martin Luther King, Jr. At the time of Baldwin’s death in 1987, he left behind only thirty completed pages of his manuscript. Now, in his incendiary new documentary, master filmmaker Raoul Peck envisions the book James Baldwin never finished. The result is a radical, up-to-the-minute examination of race in America, using Baldwin’s original words and flood of rich archival material. I Am Not Your Negro is a journey into black history that connects the past of the Civil Rights movement to the present of #BlackLivesMatter. It is a film that questions black representation in Hollywood and beyond. And, ultimately, by confronting the deeper connections between the lives and assassination of these three leaders, Baldwin and Peck have produced a work that challenges the very definition of what America stands for. 95 minutes. http://www.iamnotyournegrofilm.com/

Saroyan Theatre
730 M Street Fresno, CA 93721

About This Event

Based on the novel by Pulitzer and Nobel-Prize-winning author John Steinbeck, the opera tells the story of two migrant farm laborers moving from place to place in California’s Central Valley looking for work during the Great Depression.  Written in 1969 by renowned American composer Carlisle Floyd, the opera features folk song references, open harmonies and poignant melodies.  Written at a time when most composers were deeply entrenched in the experimentalism of the avant garde, Floyd’s music bucks the trend and provides the listener with such tonal and lyric music that the piece has been referred to as one of the first American verismo operas in the repertoire.
The performance of this opera will accompany an exhibit exploring the history of migrant workers and the growth of agriculture in the Central Valley during the Great Depression of the 1930s.

Music and Libretto by Carlisle Floyd (b. 1926)
Based on the novel by John Steinbeck (1902-68)
Sung in English with English surtitles
Conducted by Ryan Murray

Clovis North High School- Shaghoian Concert Hall
2770 E. International Ave Fresno, CA

About This Event

Concert of Remembrance and Healing: 75 years after Executive Order 9066 and the incarceration of ethnic Japanese in American concentration camps.

This concert is intended to remember a significant historical event that affected members of our own citizenry seventy-five years ago. Central Valley neighbors, friends, and family of Japanese descent were among those forced from their homes and incarcerated in camps. While none were actually charged with espionage or sabotage, Executive Order 9066 signed by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt caused 120,000 men, women, and children to be locked up for the duration of World War II.

Musical performances were often held in the camps, with Beethoven's "Ode to Joy" a common selection. Extolling brotherhood, "Ode to Joy" will be the finale of this concert performance.
Pre-concert speaker, Fresno Gumyo Taiko drummers, Central Valley Japanese School children’s choir

Tickets: $25*
*Tickets can be purchased by mail or online. For ticket information, call 559-709-6245 or email us at fresnocommunitychorus@gmail.com. Tickets also available from any Fresno Community Chorus Master Chorale member. Unclaimed tickets at Will Call will be released 10 minutes before concert time. About This Event

H.E.A.T. Symposium 2017: Love & Justice

"Imagining a table large enough for everyone's suffering."

#BringTheHEAT

In a society where 'othering' one another (the 'us verses them' narrative) is becoming common, we are all being presented with choices around how we are going to make decisions about safety. Daily, we are being offered anecdotes that 'we are safer when we are separated from one another'. This directly impacts how we relate to one another. There has been deep pain and trauma in our communities for decades- caused by law enforcement. Mistrust and fear of law enforcement continues to be reinforced, through daily images and footage of unarmed people of color being brutalized and shot by police. The pain is also felt by law enforcement, with officer suicide rates being at an all time high. Can we imagine a table that is large enough for everyone's suffering- both community and police?

On June 2-3, in Fresno, California, we plan to build on our commitment to heal and build trust through reform, by reflecting on strategies that Leaders have taken to try and transform the public safety system in their local context. Plenary and breakout sessions, group discussion and provocative panel sessions will share thought leadership and best practices. We're inviting you to participate and bring community leaders and partners- especially those most impacted by the pain.Your voice is absolutely necessary, in order to rebuild a public safety system that works for everyone. Please join us for the second statewide H.E.A.T. Symposium!

Fresno Art Museum
2233 North First Street Fresno, CA 93703

About This Event

Born in Changchun, China in 1948 and raised during the Maoist regime, Hung Liu studied mural painting at the Central Academy of Fine Art in Beijing before immigrating to the United States in 1984 to attend the University of California, San Diego. As a painter, Liu challenges the documentary authority of historical Chinese photographs by subjecting them to the more reflective process of painting. Her paintings utilize prostitutes, refugees, street performers, soldiers, laborers, and prisoners as subjects, reinventing the moments captured through a lens while simultaneously acknowledging the passing of time and breathing new life into faded memories. Much of the meaning of Liu’s painting comes from the way the washes and drips dissolve the documentary images, suggesting the passage of memory into history. Washing her subjects in veils of dripping linseed oil, she both “preserves and destroys the image.” A two-time recipient of a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship in painting, Liu’s works have been exhibited extensively and collected by many institutions including the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; and the National Gallery of Art, Washington D.C. She is a Professor Emerita at Mills College, where she has taught since 1990. The Fresno Art Museum is very proud to present Hung Liu as the Council of 100 Distinguished Woman Artist of 2016.

About This Event

Daniel Eachus is a rising young star in the comedy world. At only 25, Eachus has the chops of a comedy veteran and people are taking notice. Born and raised in Fresno, CA, he was surrounded by farms but didn’t want to smell raisins for the rest of his life, so he turned to comedy to get him out. For college, Daniel’s wish came true and he left Fresno to study in Long Beach, CA. By day, he was a student, by night he performed on the stand-up comedy circuit. After just one year of nightly performances, he became the youngest finalist ever in the “Funniest Comic in Los Angeles“ contest held at the Jon Lovitz Comedy Club. He’s been entertaining audiences ever since. Since then Eachus has been a regional finalist on Comedy Central’s “Up Next” and has been featured on Sideshow Network’s “Five Spot”. When he’s not doing stand-up, Daniel acts, writes, and produces the comedy sketch series “Bigfoot Chasers” and just made his first appearance on SpikeTV. He also enjoys an occasional Capri Sun and granola bars. Open-mic following the Headliner so bring the funny and sign-up. About This Event

When the host is introducing James Frey to the stage, some might get confused and think he is best selling author, but he’s not. Although he shares the same name, one look at the comedian James Frey and you will realize he is big in Japan and huge in America. Standing at 6’5 and sporting a beard, long hair and clothes that have an outdoorsy feel, give him a memorable quality along with his comedy. “My comedy is obscure. It’s so random. I try and say things that people have never thought of,” he said. Influenced by Zach Galifianakis, Jim Carrey and Mitch Hedberg—Frey has a love for jokes, but ultimately, “It’s always been in the back of my mind, being a comedic actor and I finally got enough courage and following a passion is worth pretty much anything I can think of,” he notes. Doing stand up comedy is preparing him for being a working comedic actor, and he hones his skills at the Upright Citizen’s Brigade and the well known Groundlings Improv program. Frey has come a long way in a short time, being that he is already hosting comedy shows and performing gigs. Prior to working the stage for laughs, Frey graduated from Cal Poly but then worked as a paramedic for four years. “It was a cool job, but too serious,” he admits. “I don’t like to be serious.” His journey started out slowly but has evolved nicely. “I moved down here from San Luis Obispo and I am still finding myself, but I am pretty funny in real life, and go on stage and say things I find to be funny,” he said, regarding performing stand up comedy. He challenges some rules that others might impose. “I think if a joke is funny, you can say it anytime. I don’t take things seriously. I have a relaxed attitude about life. I’d rather just enjoy my time,” he confesses. About This Event

My name is Sovereign Syre ( I know you're wondering what kind of name that is. It's a made up one.) I'm a stand-up comedian and writer, an internationally published poet (not a joke), a podcast artist (totally a joke) and an occasional model. I've also starred in several controversial films. My career started in 2009 when I left graduate school and moved to NYC to work as a model and write the Great American Novel. I have been fortunate enough to be photographed by master photographers Andrew Einhorn, George Pitts, Ken Lichtenwalter, Keith Major, Richard Avery, Ken Penn, Allan Amato, Chris Cuffaro, Clayton Cubbit and Nathan Appel. Images of me have been published in Vogue Italia and a ton of other arthouse digital and print publications along with a few coffee table books. In 2011 I was scouted by a porn director named Nica Noelle and lured to Los Angeles to make a new thing that was emerging called "feminist porn." I starred in over 150 adult movies in the girl on girl genre and was even nominated for All-Girl Performer of the year by AVN in 2014. I've had my poems published internationally and I'm the creator/writer/star of Boss Bitches of History on the Wisecrack Channel on YouTube. I've also been working on this novel, for like, forever. I've performed standup at The World Famous Comedy Store, The Ice House, The Stand, New York Comedy Club, The Funny Bone, Dangerfield's and tons of bars and alternative venues. I've opened for Marc Maron and featured for Big Jay Oakerson too! For nearly two years I've been the host of a weekly podcast, OBSERVATIONS with Sovereign Syre, where I ask comedians to get serious about everything from themselves to the world economy. Keeney Brothers Band
Keeney Brothers Band
The Keeney Brothers are a Fresno, CA based band that has been performing for over 30 years. Billing themselves as "The Last Real Southern Influenced Outlaw Country Band", they play too loud, too fast and never play a song like the record. They let the audience on the stage, and members change up instruments during the set. On a good night, they are a tough act to follow.

About This Event

With over ten recordings as a leader, vocalist, businessman and educator Kevin Mahogany has been the standard setter for jazz vocalists for three decades. His broad baritone was forged in his hometown: the legendary jazz metropolis known as Kansas City; where he learned to swing like Charlie Parker, shout the blues like Big Joe Turner, and cry a ballad like Lester Young; while, extending, elaborating and refining the jazz vocal legacies of Lambert, Hendricks & Ross, Eddie Jefferson and Al Jarreau into the myriad, interwoven dimensions of music – from gutbucket, the Great American Songbook, and gospel, to Mingus to Motown.
Mahogany published a magazine, The Jazz Singer and, with his business partner, Rick Cioffi, started his own Mahogany Jazz label, and recorded two recordings: Kevin Mahogany: Big Band, To: Johnny Hartman, a tribute to the exceptional vocalist who recorded with Dizzy Gillespie and John Coltrane, and The Coltrane Hartman Fantasy, Vol. 1, with tenor saxophonist Tony Lakatos, inspired by the legendary 1963 Impulse recording, John Coltrane and Johnny Hartman.
In addition to being a trend-setting leader of the first order, Kevin Mahogany has also been an in-demand sideman and guest artist with a select cadre of jazz stars. He’s recorded with T.S. Monk (Monk on Monk), The Ray Brown Trio (Christmas Songs With Ray Brown), Marlena Shaw (Dangerous), Roseanna Vitro (Passion Dance), Carl Allen (Testimonial), Barbara Morrison (Visit Me) and Elvin Jones (It Don’t Mean A Thing).
In 1996, Mahogany made his screen debut in the 1996 Robert Altman film Kansas City, portraying a character based on blues singer Big Joe Turner, and was also featured on soundtrack.
