Fresno Filmworks presents "Miss Sharon Jones"

The Tower Theatre
815 E Olive Ave. Fresno, CA 93728

About This Event

Fresno Filmworks presents the American independent documentary “Miss Sharon Jones!” a powerful crowd-pleaser that captures iconic soul diva Sharon Jones during the most intense and courageous year of her life. Often compared to the legendary James Brown for her energetic performances, Jones finds her career taking off after years of being kept down by a music industry that branded her “too short, too Black, too fat.” After decades of working odd jobs, from a corrections officer to a wedding singer, she enjoys a breakthrough in middle age after joining forces with the Brooklyn R&B outfit The Dap-Kings. Then in 2013, on the eve of the release of her album “Give the People What They Want,” Jones is diagnosed with cancer, but she battles back with a magnetizing spirit of heart, wit, and humor to triumphantly reclaim center stage. Directed by two-time Academy Award winner Barbara Kopple.
