Art in the Garden: McLane Student “Gaman”- Japanese at Manzanar, Exhibit

Shinzen Friendship Garden
114 W. Audubon Dr. Fresno, CA 93720

About This Event

The McLane High School Art Venture Project “Gaman – enduring the seeming unbearable with patience and dignity” will be on display at Shinzen during the Spring Cultural Faire, Saturday, April 7, 10 – 4pm

This is a powerful presentation of images and stories of the incarceration of Japanese Americans at Manzanar. Through an interdisciplinary study of the Executive Order 9066 at the outset of America’s involvement in WWII, the students bring to life Japanese experience at Manzanar. The students used photography, interviews and a trip to Manzanar in order to translate the experience to a meaningful art project.  There are multiple panels, actually wooden doors on which the students’ art is created.  As one approaches these boards, you may travel along with the train to Manzanar, or walk past the guard towers and fencing of the camp, and then come to the individual stories represented on a single board with the survivors’ image.  Shinzen is honored to have an opportunity to share this exhibition with the Fresno Community.
