Fresno Art Musem
2233 N. First Fresno, Ca 93703

About This Event

Gian Carlo Menotti's fully staged double feature in English. In the modern day comedy, The Telephone, Ben wants to propose to his friend Lucy, but is frustrated by the constant interruption of her telephone. In The Medium, Baba, as "Madame Flora," conducts bogus séances with her daughter Monica and a gypsy deaf-mute named Toby to extract money from bereaved parents. At a séance, she feels a pair of hands on her throat and panics. Has the spirit world come to punish her, or was it merely Toby, whom she treats abusively? Unable to get an answer to this question, she retreats to the bottle. But, what will happen next?

First Armenian Presbyterian Church
430 South First Street Fresno, California 93702

About This Event

The 119th annual autumn food bazaar at California’s oldest Armenian Church will take place on National Forget-Me-Not Day. The First Armenian Presbyterian Church of Fresno will hold its 2016 Merchants’ Lunch and Country Store from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Thursday, November 10. Falling on the eve of the 90th Veterans Day, National Forget-Me-Not Day is a time-honored occasion for remembering friends and family in the Season of Harvest. The Forget-Me-Not flowering plant is a symbol of the global Armenian Community and was the emblem of the Armenian Genocide Centenary Commemoration in 2015.

The Merchants’ Lunch will take place at the Church Campus, 430 South First Street at Historic Huntington Boulevard, near Downtown Fresno. The event will feature lunch at $15 per person, with seasoned beef filet kebab or chicken kebab, rice pilaf, cheese boureg, garden salad, pickled tourshee, fresh peda bread, paklava, and complimentary beverage among the offerings. Meals will be available to guests for dine-in, take-out, or drive through. The drive-through lane will be located on the Raisina Street side of the Church Campus, one block west of First Street between Huntington Boulevard and Balch Avenue. More information is available by calling (559) 237-6638, faxing (559) 237-9526, or e-mailing administration@fapc.net.

The Merchants’ Lunch Country Store will be open throughout the luncheon hours for holiday shopping. The Store will offer such ethnic delicacies as choreg, souberag, paklava, yalanchi, bottled grape leaves, gutah, tourshee, rojik, and basdegh. The abundant produce of the San Joaquin Valley and a host of homemade breads will round out the comestibles in the Store pantry. The Central California literary team of author Janice Stevens and watercolorist Pat Hunter will be present to autograph copies of their newly-published book, “Breaking Bread with William Saroyan.” The duo are partners in the Gallery II arts venue in northwest Fresno and have collaborated on a sextet of local historical works. Their new volume is a compilation of authentic Armenian recipes, reminiscences of the Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright who grew up at FAPC, as well as 40 original watercolors depicting the agricultural bounty and locales of the San Joaquin Valley. Some of the recipes are drawn from “A Hundred Years and Still Cooking,” the FAPC Fidelis Women’s Society Centennial recipe collection. The 496-page volume includes instructions for preparing 636 different ethnic recipes and sells for $35. First reviewed in the January 14, 1998 edition of The Los Angeles Times, the cookbook is a unique compendium of heritage recipes, Scriptural truths, Old World culinary precepts, and Central California ethnic history. Reverend Gregory Vahack Haroutunian, Reverend Mgo Mekredijian, and Reverend Philip C. Garo, Jr. comprise the FAPC Leadership Team. Kalem and Jonelle S.G. Kazarian are Co-Chairs of the 2016 Merchants’ Lunch and Country Store. Chartered by 40 immigrants in a rented hall on July 25, 1897, FAPC today is a multigenerational congregation drawn from the Old and New Worlds. FAPC is a member congregation of the Evangelical Presbyterian Church and the Armenian Evangelical Union of North America. The theme of the congregation is “Love Christ. Love Others. Make Disciples.”

About This Event

When the host is introducing James Frey to the stage, some might get confused and think he is best selling author, but he’s not. Although he shares the same name, one look at the comedian James Frey and you will realize he is big in Japan and huge in America. Standing at 6’5 and sporting a beard, long hair and clothes that have an outdoorsy feel, give him a memorable quality along with his comedy. “My comedy is obscure. It’s so random. I try and say things that people have never thought of,” he said. Influenced by Zach Galifianakis, Jim Carrey and Mitch Hedberg—Frey has a love for jokes, but ultimately, “It’s always been in the back of my mind, being a comedic actor and I finally got enough courage and following a passion is worth pretty much anything I can think of,” he notes. Doing stand up comedy is preparing him for being a working comedic actor, and he hones his skills at the Upright Citizen’s Brigade and the well known Groundlings Improv program. Frey has come a long way in a short time, being that he is already hosting comedy shows and performing gigs. Prior to working the stage for laughs, Frey graduated from Cal Poly, but then worked as a paramedic for four years. “It was a cool job, but too serious,” he admits. “I don’t like to be serious.” His journey started out slowly, but has evolved nicely. “I moved down here from san Luis Obsipo and I am still finding myself, but I am pretty funny in real life, and go on stage and say things I find to be funny,” he said, regarding performing stand up comedy. He challenges some rules that others might impose. “I think if a joke is funny, you can say it anytime. I don’t take things seriously. I have a relaxed attitude about life. I’d rather just enjoy my time,” he confesses. Some might wonder what being a 6’5 comedian is like. He has been compared to looking like a lumberjack, and one might wonder if he fares well with the ladies being a tall drink of water. “I think I am too intimidating. Some women can’t handle a lumberjack—can’t handle the heavy timber I am working with,” he chimes. A skill that maybe most tall men don’t have that Frey does is dancing. He has been deemed “James Fancy Feet,” due to his “astonishing dance moves,” he said. “I don’t bring them out much—kind of like a werewolf only comes out during a full moor or special occasions. The dance moves are there when needed, and originality is my strong suit.” You may also think a strong tall man wouldn’t get nervous before a comedy gig, but that isn’t true. Nerves get the best of him in that he admits to pacing around, and peeing a lot before he gets called to the stage. “I’d rather watch other comedians than think about my own set. There is a bit of anxiety before you go up. But once you are on stage and have a microphone, there is pure enjoyment,” he quips. An element, most comedians dare to overcome are hecklers and having an off night, where there are minimal laughs. Obviously, the goal is to get others laughing, but that doesn’t always happen. I have had shows where I walk off feeling like a king, and other times felt like never telling another joke again in my life,” he said. So how does this tall comedian overcome such obstacles? “I say ‘I know this joke is funny and I had an off night. Every time I tell a joke, I tell it a little different and a little better. I look for improvements anywhere I can. You never stick with something. Your set is an evolution and it constantly evolves.” Those are wise words from a lumberjack. Now if you ever run into Frey in a dark alley or outside of a comedy club, you should be forewarned of his pet peeves. “You know what bugs me? Is every time I tell someone I am in comedy, they always say, ‘tell me a joke.’ You might as well say dance for us monkey,” he quips. But if you want to get on his good side, laugh at his jokes. When Frey isn’t performing comedy, he is doing something active. He shared that he loves the smell of the snow and the mountains. “I am a huge hiker and hike a lot. I am an outdoors guy and like being in nature,” he shares.

About This Event

Born and raised in the suburbs of Chicago, Matt Cole knew since the moment he could talk that he wanted to make people laugh. He realized he had a knack for comedy the same way most comedians do, by getting thrown outta class for being a smart ass at a young age. Fast Forward through a haze of drinking and an early midlife-crisis later, Matt started pursuing Stand-up Comedy in Orange County California in early 2013. Since that time, Matt has become a Brea Improv regular and has performed at The Comedy Store, Flappers Comedy Club, The Ice House, both Irvine and Ontario Improv’s. He can be found nightly with a microphone in hand flooring audiences with true tales at countless other comedy shows in the surrounding areas. As a feature act Matt has had the opportunity to open for Jeff Garcia, Sam Tripoli, Steve Simeone, Jason Collings, Cory and Chad (The Smash Brothers) and Tom Segura. On the festival circuit Matt has been selected to preform at the Ventrua Harbor Comedy Festival and Devil’s Cup Comedy Festival (NYC). His comedy has been featured in OC Weekly, Center Stage Magazine and on KROQ’s Kevin and Bean Show. Matt hosts the Honest Ignorance Podcast, in which he brings in guests (mostly other comics) that that live life outside of the “norm” in hopes of having a few laugh while also educating himself and others to whatever that “Ignorance” might be. Most importantly, Matt has had the privilege to run comedy fundraisers for Operation Underground Railroad. A Charity that sends in BADASS ex-Navy Seals, CIA and Special Forces undercover to rescue children from sex traffickers. You can find more info at www.ourrescue.org

About This Event

Myles Weber’s Stand Up Comedy addiction started very early in life. By the time he was eight years old, he was sneaking out of his bed at night to watch any stand-up comedy show he could find on black box cable. When his teacher explained to him what stand-up was and how comedians make people laugh just like he did, he immediately jumped at the opportunity to enter his school's talent show. “I won the whole thing doing stand-up, mainly because I was the only kid that wasn’t singing 'Living La Vida Loca' or 'What A Girl Wants.'”At that moment, Myles got bit by the comedy bug; hard. Since then, Myles became obsessed with Stand-Up Comedy, studying the craft and performing almost nightly to get in his 10,000 hours. He handedly took first place in the 40th Annual San Francisco International Comedy Competition. (Past competitors include Robin Williams, Dana Carvey, Sinbad, Ellen Degeneres, Louis CK, Patton Oswald, Marc Maron, Doug Stanhope and Dane Cook.) Weber was the second youngest to win the competition and one of only two comics to ever sweep the whole thing. You may have seen Weber as the Host for Portico TV Or maybe you’ve seen him as a correspondent for Popular Science, one of the biggest science websites in the world. Also able to flex his comedy writing muscle, Myles wrote for Portico and Smosh Pit Weekly on Smosh’s YouTube Channel. (The biggest gaming channel in the world.) Myles' high energy crowd work has kept audiences in stitches all across the U.S. and Canada. Blending together high octane improv, crowd interaction and story telling, you will never see the same show twice.

Sandro was born in Boston, Massachusetts speaking in third person. After a few years of not shoveling snow and still being a child, his parents and him moved to Florida in hopes of finding happiness and sunshine. Before becoming a stand-up comedian he was in Pharmacy School to become in debt. He decided he’d rather laugh and write jokes than push pills. But he still has an affinity for medicine, pills. A joke writer at heart and a story teller by trade. He prides himself on his quick wit and ability to connect with audiences and human faces and ears. “Sarcastic and dead-pan”, “A true joy to watch...every time.” —My Relatives He likes long walks off of short piers. About This Event

Torio Van Grol was first discovered by a gentleman naturalist in 1676, causing an uproar among the clergy, who claimed that he was placed on Earth by God as a test of faith. After much careful study, Torio has been widely accepted as real, though some controversy lingers. After being raised by the Bay Area comedy scene, Torio recently relocated to Los Angeles in search of new neighborhoods to gentrify. In 2016, he was listed as one of the Bay Area's best stand-up comedians by SFist. He won the title, "Best Joke of 2015" by the award-winning SF blog Courting Comedy. Torio has performed at SF Sketchfest for the past two years, as well as many other comedy festivals including the 10,000 Laughs Festival, Santa Cruz Fringe Festival and more.

About This Event

Jersey City native,Vince Royale was always the class clown, though he never thought comedy would be his career. Currently living in Los Angeles, the former retail salesman turned stand-up comedian and reality show star of Logo/MTV’s “Bad Sex” and regular on FOX's "Laughs" has been performing in Los Angeles hot spots and New York night clubs for the past seven years. Vince is extremely down-to-earth and full of charisma and he has an uncanny ability to turn the things he sees into world class jokes. He is humble and says that his passion for comedy and ability to do what he loves in front of an audience is indeed a blessing. Vince will be the first one to tell you that his success with comedy truly happened by accident. After a few cocktails with a group of friends at a local Southern California bar, Vince swooped on stage at an open mic and made everyone laugh out loud. He was so funny that the club’s owner invited him to come back the very next week to perform in a comedy contest. Vince agreed to do the show; it’s a good thing he did because he won.

Frank's Place
1432 Fulton Street Fresno, CA 93721

About This Event

Moderated by Joe Moore, Director of Public Content, KVPR-. In The California Wellness Foundation's Advancing Wellness Poll, Central Valley residents were more likely than those in other parts of the state to give their communities poor ratings regarding neighborhood health. As the Valley has grown into a major urban area, its infrastructure--in health, education, transit, and other public services--has struggled to keep up with the need. Many communities are bridging the gaps with homegrown solutions--from the doctor who operates a clinic out of an old bus, to residents who run free taxis for their neighbors. How much can communities get done by themselves? Is self-reliance the future--or a stopgap until institutions catch up? Rey Leon of Valley LEAP's Green Raiteros rideshare, the Tulare County Food Bank's Sarah Ramirez, and Fresno State sociologist Kris Clarke visit Zócalo to examine what it takes to make a healthy neighborhood in the heart of the Valley. This event is part of a Zócalo Inquiry into what makes a healthy neighborhood, produced in conjunction with The California Wellness Foundation. To improve the health of the people of California by making grants for health promotion, wellness education and disease prevention. Learn more at CalWellness.org. About Zócalo Public Square: Zócalo Public Square connects people to ideas and to each other by examining essential questions in an accessible and broad-minded spirit. Zócalo seeks to create a welcoming intellectual space for all, at a time when our country's public sphere and our global digital conversation have become ever more polarized and segregated. Zócalo pursues this mission by convening events and by publishing ideas journalism. We are committed to translating ideas to broad audiences and to engaging a new and diverse generation in the public square. All of their events are FREE, open to the public, and followed by a hosted reception. For more information, please visit www.ZocaloPublicSquare.org. Please RSVP for this free public event by our friends at Zocalo Public Square, and we'll see you soon!

Old Town Clovis- Pollasky between Fourth & Fifth Streets
Pollasky Clovis, CA

About This Event

If there is a piece of cookware that is symbolic of the old west, it's the black pot. The old cast iron pot was used on cattle drives, in bunk houses and by pioneer mothers and grandmothers to smother steak and chicken and make sauce piquante, fricasse and goulash for generations. Some cast iron pots have passed down from one generation to the next generation of cooks in a family. Of course, the cattle drive cook-out was always accompanied by a few tall tales, traditional music and cowboy poetry, also passed down from one generation to the next. The annual Black Pot Cook-Off and Cowboy Poetry celebration carries on this grand tradition and honors Clovis' Western heritage. Free admission for spectators with tickets available for food sampling.

About This Event

DIRTY DANCING – THE CLASSIC STORY ON STAGE is an unprecedented live experience, exploding with heart-pounding music, passionate romance and sensational dancing. Seen by millions across the globe, this worldwide smash hit features the hit songs “Hungry Eyes,” “Hey Baby,” “Do You Love Me?” and the heart-stopping “(I’ve Had) The Time Of My Life.” London’s Sunday Express says, “This crowd-pleasing stage adaptation hits the jackpot!” It’s the summer of 1963, and 17-year-old Frances “Baby” Houseman is on vacation in New York’s Catskill Mountains with her older sister and parents. Baby discovers her own entertainment when she stumbles upon the staff quarters where an all-night dance party is in full swing. Mesmerized by the raunchy dance moves and the pounding rhythms, Baby can’t wait to be part of the scene, especially when she catches sight of Johnny Castle the resort dance instructor. Baby’s life is about to change forever as she is thrown in at the deep end as Johnny’s leading lady both on-stage and off with breathtaking consequences.

Classic Catering
625 4th St Clovis, CA 93612

About This Event

The Alliance Française de Fresno proudly announces its 8th annual wine dinner fundraiser “The Vendanges Feast”. Vendanges is the French word specifically reserved for wine grape harvests. In the past, the Alliance had featured a Beaujolais Nouveau event but, as an educational and cultural organization, its board decided to expand the event’s definition to introduce Fresno area Francophiles and wine lovers to individual wine regions of France. This year, we will celebrate the vintages of the Bourgogne (Burgundy) region with a meticulously paired dinner menu. The fundraiser event will feature a wine-paired, four-course dinner menu following a surprise aperitif. A silent auction will also be available to help raise funds for the Alliance’s recently established headquarters. Our new office location affords the Alliance membership a French books library, access to audio and video files, internet access to online French teaching resources and, of course, classrooms for learning French as well as listening to lectures related to the French civilization, culture, history and current events.

About This Event

Few bands in contemporary jazz have been as entertaining and artistically satisfying as Special EFX. Spearheaded by guitarist Chieli Minucci and co-founded by the late percussionist George Jinda (whose untimely passing came in 2001) in 1983, Special EFX helped to pave the road for contemporary jazz during its early years in the 80's and they continue to set the standard.

Peters Education Center- West of Save Mart Center in Student Rec. Center Building
2650 E. Shaw Ave Fresno, CA 93710

About This Event

From the well-publicized events at San Francisco State in 1968 to the image of black students with guns emerging from the takeover of the student union at Cornell University in April, 1969, the struggle for a more relevant and meaningful education, including demands for black and ethnic studies programs, became a clarion call across the country in the late 1960’s. Through the stories of these young men and women who were at the forefront of these efforts, Agents of Change examines the untold story of the racial conditions on college campuses and in the country that led to these protests. The film’s characters were caught at the crossroads of the civil rights, black power, and anti-Vietnam war movements at a pivotal time in America’s history. Today, the struggle continues with the protest in and around Ferguson, Missouri and the nationwide student-led movement, including the I, Too, Am (Harvard, UCLA, Michigan, etc.) campaigns, which according to the Boston Globe lay bare the “the racial tensions on campuses today, raising questions about inclusiveness, identity and racial stereotyping.” Agents of Change links the past to the present and the present to the past–making it not just a movie but a movement. 66 minutes. http://www.agentsofchangefilm.com/

All films screened on campus are free and open to the public. Parking is not enforced after 4 p.m. on Fridays.

Woodward Park-Shinzen Friendship Garden
114 W Audobon Dr. Fresno, CA 93720

About This Event

When strolling through the bonsai exhibit visitors may notice certain similarities in the shapes of the trunks of various bonsai. Some are rigidly vertical, upright and straight, some slant to one side or the other, some have twists and bends, while yet others lean precariously over the side of their containers and even cascade far below the container. What is revealed in these various trunk shapes is the basic language of the art of bonsai -- the "style" of the bonsai. Bonsai "styles" are the departure points of reference for bonsai artists to create and depict the infinite variety of tree images to be found in forests, mountains and sea shores. The five basic "styles" as described above - formal upright, slant, informal upright, semi-cascade and full cascade - are derived from observation of trees shaped by their environment. The tall ram-rod straight forest pines, slanting cypresses with sweeping branches providing a counter balance, juniper trunks bent and twisted, mountain conifers with trunks that lean at precarious angles or even cascade over a cliff side are all inspired by nature’s drama. The designs of all bonsai are derivative of these five basic styles. However this is not the whole story. The arrangement of branches and the numbers of trunks in a given composition add punctuation and adjectives to the language of bonsai design and give rise to a myriad of other bonsai "styles" such as forest, windswept, broom and the ethereal literati. When next you visit the Golden State Bonsai Federation’s Clark Bonsai Collection in the Shinzen Gardens view the bonsai with new eyes and see how many "styles" you can identify.

The Balloons will inflate and take off from the Clovis Rodeo Grounds starting about 6:15 a.m. Enjoy a hot, fresh cinnamon roll as you get a close up view as the giant orbs fill with hot air and pop upright, ready for lift off. By 7 a.m., they'll rise to float across the Valley sky. No balloon rides are available to the public. Cross the street to Pollasky Avenue where the real fun begins. Start with a hot breakfast from various Old Town shops and festival food vendors. Then start shopping at the 200 craft and commercial booths. Stick around for entertainment on many of the side streets.

About This Event

Phil Johnson is a man who gets mistaken for a woman, but only by those not paying attention. That revelation kicks off a battle for self-awareness where comedy and music are the weapons of choice. It's a battle that has taken Phil to such esteemed festivals as the Edinburgh Fringe and Sundance Film Festivals and the Top 8 Finals of the World Series of Comedy. "I've always been the guy who isn't quite what people expect," says Phil. Using that experience, Phil pokes holes in the medical marijuana argument, discusses being a white guy at a hip hop show (and the innocent gestures that can get him in trouble), and reveals why Hawaii isn't the paradise we think it is. From Shakespearean bees to redneck vampires to anthropomorphic cell phones with weight issues, Phil Johnson fills the stage with quirky characters that combine social satire with absurdist flights of fancy. Then the guitar comes out and kicks the show into an even higher gear with songs about the bright future (and dark past) of babies and what he would do if he woke up one morning as an actual woman. On stage, Phil's playful humor and likeable, endearing manner allow him to shake things up without antagonizing the audience. In the end we can only be who we are, try to understand others, and hope they understand us.

Frank's Place
1420 Fulton Street Fresno, CA 93721

About This Event

San Francisco based RoastSF is stopping by Franks Place in Fresno for one night only with their hit sell out show: Comedy Roast of Donald Trump. Watch as they bring together top insult comics from LA, SF and Fresno for a heart stopping, fall-to-the-floor laughing, no-jokes barred comedy roast. Its like watching one of the Comedy Central Roasts except live and uncensored! Drinking is encouraged, sensitivity. is not. Whether you love him, or hate him, you have to admit Donald Trumps got you feelin some type of way. Come see if he falls victim to the comics left wing or if he can take the abuse and stay calm enough to defend himself. Think it will be mean? Yup. But dont worry, RoastSF is bipartisan, this show will be as much about mocking Trump as it is about those who love, and those who, for some reason hate him. Actual Presidential Candidate/Billionaire/GrandeDouche Donald Trump will not be attendance. He has no association to this show. RoastSF has a top notch improv actor who has spent his entire life being a dick. Hes also got a killer Donald impersonation, often goes back on what he says and knows nothing about politics. Hes perfect! So if you wanna laugh your ass off and have a great night out, grab a ticket, a crate of rotten tomatoes and get ready for some awkward selfies with The Donald! Doors 8pm / Show 9pm - Ages 18+ #TrumpRoast #MakeAmericaHateAgain ***This show has sold out it's last 3 performances, make sure to get your tickets quick***

Saroyan Theater

About This Event

Based on the bestselling 1993 memoir by Sister Helen Prejean, the opera tells the powerful story of her difficult journey providing spiritual guidance to a death row inmate at Louisiana State Penitentiary facing imminent execution, the troubling impact on the families of the victims, and the issue of the death penalty in our society. With a brilliant libretto by Terrance McNally and a dramatic and incredibly lyric musical setting by Jake Heggie, this opera is sure to keep you on the edge of your seat. The memoir was the basis for the award-winning 1995 film starring Susan Sarandon and Sean Penn. Jake Heggie is widely considered one of the great living opera composers.
