About This Event

The Photography exhibit “Tomiko Jones: Hatsubon” will be on display at the Phebe Conley Art Gallery weekdays Sept. 20 to Oct. 12 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Jones will give an artist lecture from 3-4:30 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 20 in Conley 101, followed by an artist’s reception from 5 to 7 p.m. in the Phebe Conley Art Gallery. The exhibit examines the ceremony “hatsubon” that marks the first anniversary of a loved one’s death held during the yearly ritual of O-bon, a Japanese Buddhist custom which honors ancestors. It weaves together photographic imagery Jones collected in Swissvale, Pennsylvania, the town of her father’s birth; Hawaii, her mother’s home and her father’s final resting place; and California, where her parents met and Jones was born. The materiality of the work suggests the dualities of the fleeting and the lasting, the ephemeral and the corporeal, and the pendulous state between longing and release. With this body of work, we travel to the unnamed coast in Tomiko Jones’ landscape—where the river meets the sea—to ritually set free the spirit and body of her father. Hatsubon is a memorial exhibition exploring the dynamic tension between tradition and performance through photographs and objects. Jones is an internationally recognized artist who received awards including the Center for Photography at Woodstock AIR Program, En Foco New Works Fellowship in New York, 4Culture and CityArtists in Seattle, and Pépinières Européennes pour Jeunes Artistes in France. Tomiko was an invited Resident Artist at Museé Niépce in Chalon-Sur-Saône, France, and a Fellow at The Camargo Foundation, Cassis, France
